ENGL 202(S) Modern Drama

An introduction to some of the major plays of the past hundred years, and to major movements in European drama of the period. Likely readings will include Ibsen's The Wild Duck and Hedda Gabler, Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard, Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest, Shaw's Heartbreak House, O'Casey's The Plough and the Stars, Pirandello's Six Characters in Search of An Author, Brecht's Mother Courage, Beckett's Waiting for Godot, O'Neill's A Long Day's Journey into Night, Pinter's The Homecoming, and Stoppard's The Real Inspector Hound. Requirements: two 4- to 5-page papers, regular journal entries or postings, a final exam, and regular, active participation in class discussions. Prerequisite: English 101. Enrollment limited to 40.
