BIOL 102(S) The Organism

This course uses an evolutionary approach to introduce organismal biology. The course stresses interrelatedness of different levels of biological organization from the cell to the organism. Topics include the cell cycle, animal and plant development, evolutionary mechanisms, speciation, and biodiversity. Examples are drawn from a broad range of animal, fungal, and plant groups. In addition to textbook assignments, articles from recent biological literature are assigned and discussed. Evaluation will be based on two hour tests, a final exam, and weekly lab reports or paper abstracts. Lectures, discussions, and laboratory: six hours a week. Prerequisite: Biology 101.
