RLSP 401(F) Studies in Modern Spanish Literature
This is a variable topics course. For the 1997-98, the topic will be: "The Contemporary Spanish Novel." The course will analyze the most representative novels of post-Civil War Spain (1939 to the present) in order to delineate and define the main phase of the development of the novelistic genre, from the social realism of the 1940s and 50s, through the writers' efforts to create their own voice and language and move away from tradition in the later stages of the dictatorship, to the final explosion of freedom and experimentation under democracy. Reading from works by C. Laforet, A. M. Matute, C. J. Cela, C. Mart#n-Gaite, L. Mart#n-Santos, J. Mars# and J. Goytisolo. Conducted in Spanish. Requirements: a short paper (6 pages), an oral presentation, a final paper (10-12 pages) and a final exam. Course grade will be based on active participation. Prerequisite: any 300-level course or permission of the instructor.
