RLFR 110(F) Introduction to French Studies: French Versus Not French*

This course serves as an introduction to French Studies and will be conducted in French. We will look at how the French have produced a sense of what "is French" by way of imagining what is not French. This will take us to French representations of such "Others" as the Orient, Africa and America. We will also look at the reverse side of the coin and examine Francophonic (at once French and Not French) cultural artifacts that bear witness to the complexities of personal, cultural and national identities in the modern world. We will be looking at a mix of materials from both "low" and "high" culture, from the national anthem "La Marseillaise" to Jean-Luc Godard's "A Bout de Souffle," and from great moments in French history as well as from contemporary France. Conducted in French. Prerequisite: French 109 or an honors grade in French 104 or 105 or by placement test or by permission of the instructor.
