PSCI 217(S) Los Angeles: A Post Industrial City (Offered 1997-98 only)
The city of Los Angeles has seen a significant loss of employment along with dramatic demographic shifts. This course focuses on the economic, political, and ethnic and demographic causes and consequences of Los Angeles' emergence as a post industrial city. In addition, this course will examine the connection between some recent events and the city's changing economy (including the 1992 Los Angeles civil disturbances, the denial of education and social services to immigrant children, and the end of affirmative action). The course will conclude by addressing proposals for coping with these issues. Requirements: midterm, final, and papers. No prerequisites.
