PSCI 205(F) Latino Politics (Offered 1997-98 only)*

This course will deal with the participation of Latinos in U.S. politics. We will consider how, where, and why Latinos do and do not participate. Latino political participation is shaped by factors such as immigration status, national origin, generational attitudes, language proficiency, regional influences and inter ethnic considerations. We also will consider some of the successes and failures of organizing strategies, the power of the electoral process, and relevant public policy issues that concern Latinos. The course will conclude with several recommendations and strategies for improving Latino political participation at the Federal, state and local levels. Requirements: midterm, final, and papers. No prerequisites.
