PHYS 404(S) Elementary Particle Physics (Offered 1997-98; not to be offered 1998-99)

This introduction to the Standard Model of particle physics begins with a historical and qualitative survey. After a review of special relativistic kinematics, the important role of symmetries in particle physics is examined. With this background, the Feynman rules are developed and applied to quantum electrodynamics, quantum chromodynamics, and the weak interaction. The nature of gauge field theories and spontaneous symmetry breaking will be explored. Evaluation will be based on problem sets, midterm, final exam and a final paper. Prerequisite: Physics 301.
