HIST 366T W. E. B. Du Bois (Not offered 1997-98)*
W. E. B. Du Bois, a gifted and influential African American intellectual, made multiple contributions to scholarship, social change, Pan Africanism, and international affairs. The encyclopedic scope of his historical, sociological, journalistic, and fictional writings addressed from several perspectives how to understand and resolve the perennial problem of race in American society and the world. Students in this tutorial will explore in assigned readings and discussions the broad range of Du Bois' thought and action. Each week some students will write a 7- to 10-page paper on some aspect of his ideas and involvements. Students will also critique each others' essays. During the semester, students will write a final paper on a significant theme in Du Bois' life or work. Enrollment limited. Group A
