HIST 359(F) The Cold War
This research seminar will explore U.S. foreign policy during the Cold War (1945-1989). After beginning with an examination of the origins of the Cold War and the alternatives presented to the containment doctrine, the course will move on to examine the militarization of the Cold War, the expansion of an anti-communist foreign policy to the Third World, the origins and legacy of the U.S. involvement in Vietnam, the revival of the Cold War during the 1980s, and the effect of the Soviet Union's collapse on the U.S. standing in international affairs. Evaluation will be based on class participation and two research papers. Enrollment limited. Group A
