HIST 357 The U.S. Congress (Not offered 1997-98)
This seminar will look at American political, constitutional, diplomatic, and social history through the prism of the United States Congress. Topics include Congress under the Articles and Constitution, the institutional development of Congress, the emergence of the Senate in the early nineteenth century, Congress during the Civil War and Gilded Age, and various aspects of congressional history since 1900. Extensive use will be made of congressional documents. Evaluation will be based on class participation, class presentations and short papers, and a research paper. Group A
