HIST 328(F) History of Canada
A comparative study of the emergence of Canada as the "other" North American nation, beginning with the period of European settlement by the French and English in the seventeenth century. The subsequent efforts to establish a national identity which can accommodate both traditions will be an underlying theme of the course. Topics will include the struggle for self-government by the colonies of British North America after the American Revolution, the creation of the Dominion of Canada and its evolution into an independent nation, efforts to incorporate native peoples and later immigrants into the Canadian "mosaic," and continuing comparisons with the historical development of the United States. The course will conclude with an examination of the current crisis in Canada's search for national unity and survival. A discussion course with occasional lectures. Evaluation will be based on class participation, a midterm and final exam, and brief essays. Group A
