HIST 309 The Social History of American Medicine (Not offered 1997-98)

The course will examine the impact of medicine upon American society mainly during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The modernization of hospitals, medical education, and scientific research will be explored. Such topics as professionalization of health care practitioners, medicine and race, medicine and gender, the rise of corporate medicine, and other topics also will be covered. Requirements: a midterm, a final exam, and a 10- to 12-page research paper. Group A
