HIST 303 Afro-American Religious History (Same as Religion 225) (Not offered 1997-98)*

The course will examine the pivotal role that religion has played in the Afro-American experience. Class discussions will focus upon the development of Black churches and denominations, their involvement in movements for abolition, civic and economic equality, and efforts to evangelize in Africa. Gender, liberation theology, and other issues also will be explored.
Evaluation will be based on class participation, a midterm, a final exam, and a 10- to 12-page research paper.
