HIST 228 The Western Urban World: Hamlets, Villages, Towns, and Cities in Early History (Same as Environmental Studies 228) (Not offered 1997-98)
This course is intended to give each student an introduction to the history and evolution of the city from Antiquity to the late Medieval period. We begin by examining the gilded cities of Ancient Egypt and Greece, and the slums and suburbs of Rome. We will also analyze the social composition and functions of cities in North and Central America before Columbus, and the patterns of urbanization in Africa. The culture of the city is a central focus. Class and power relations will be examined along with distinct social expressions: spectacles, festivals, crime, punishment, and vice are but a few. Finally we will follow the rise of a modern slave trade which forged links between these continents and, as we shall see, sparked an urban revolution in the West. Evaluation will be based on a midterm exam, final essay, and a final exam. Groups A, B, C, and D
