HIST 106 The Old Regime and the French Revolution (Not offered 1997-98)
This course will explore the origins and nature of the French Revolution of 1789-1795, one of the defining moments of modern history. We will begin with a close reading and analysis of a classic nineteenth-century analysis, Alexis de Tocqueville's The Old Regime and French Revolution. Using both sources from the period and recent scholarship, we will then evaluate his model. In the process we will come to understand more deeply the world of eighteenth-century France, the nature and sources of the Revolution, the complexities of defining the "causes" of great events, and the varied methods of the modern discipline of History. Evaluation will be based on class participation, several short essays, and a self-scheduled final exam. Enrollment limited. Preference to first-year students.
