ENVI 226(S) International Environmental Politics (Same as Political Science 226)

This course explores how global society responds to such international environmental problems as climate change, ozone depletion and species extinction. The central focus will be on political processes, such as how governments negotiate with each other, how international institutions can play a role in solving (or exacerbating) problems, and how groups compete for influence. The perspectives of a wide range of social actors will be investigated, including governments of industrial and developing countries, non-governmental organizations, scientific experts, and industry. The readings will consist of a combination of analytical investigations into these questions (drawn from competing theoretical perspectives) and of descriptive case studies (covering a wide range of issues). Simulated negotiations will be used to apply and test lessons learned.
Grading will be based on participation (15%), a take-home midterm (30%), and a term paper of 15-20 pages (55%).
