ENVI 212(F) Sustainable Development (Same as Economics 212)*

Can poor countries achieve sustainable development? Or should they grow now and repair the environmental damage later? Is sustainability only a concern for the rich countries? Is international trade bad for the environment and sustainability? This course will examine sustainable development as an idea and policy goal. It will emphasize an understanding of the causes of unsustainable use of natural resources, and will focus on the potential for remedies that mitigate degradation and promote sustainability. The course will apply economic analysis to understanding local, national, developing country, and global sustainability issues. Course material will build on theories of externalities, public goods, welfare economics, social choice, intertemporal and inter-generational allocation, including the dynamics of behavior, institutions, and technological change. A range of policy approaches and other potential solutions will be examined. The advantages, disadvantages and applicability of each will be considered under different circumstances. Prerequisite: Economics 101.
