ENGL 369(S) Language, Gender, and Power

Whose language am I speaking? This course has two aims: we will explore the role of language and visual representation in the formation of sexual identity, and we will consider the questions of power-personal, cultural, institutional-that arise from the profoundly entangled relationship between subjects and the forms that convey them. The course will treat works from As You Like It to Some Like It Hot, historical texts, and a range of theorists who have explored issues of sexual identity and power (Irigaray, Cixous, Foucault, Lacan, Rose, and DeLauretis, among others). Requirements: one short and one long paper (15-20 pages). Major Seminar. Open only to English majors and to qualified non-majors. Permission of English Department chair required; see information above. Enrollment limited to 15. (Criticism)
