ENGL 311(S) Studies in Shakespeare: Four Tragedies (Same as Theatre 317)

A close examination of four of Shakespeare's great tragedies: Hamlet, Othello, Antony and Cleopatra, and King Lear. A variety of critical perspectives will be invoked in an attempt to clarify if not solve the many mysteries and problems posed by these plays. We will also consider larger claims, questions, and theories concerning the nature of tragedy raised by our reading of Shakespeare.
Requirements: several short (1 page) responses, one 5-page paper, and one 10-page paper.
Prerequisite: English 101. Enrollment limited to 25. (Pre-1800)
