ECON 516 Households in the Development Process (Same as Economics 375) (Not offered 1997-98)

In many developing countries, households are the sites where many economic decisions are made. Households function in a variety of roles-as producers, investors in physical and human capital, managers of risk, and consumers. But how do households make decisions? Do they respond rationally to economic signals, such as prices and policy incentives? How are resources distributed among household members? How is household labor allocated? Do household decisions benefit some household members at the expense of others? In addition to a final exam, students will be expected to write a research paper. Undergraduate enrollment accepted with instructor's permission.
