BIOL 306(S) Advanced Molecular Genetics

This course explores the structure and function of prokaryotic and eukaryotic genes using an integrated genetic and molecular approach. Topics covered include DNA replication, chromatin structure, transposable genetic elements. transcription, and RNA processing. Laboratory will provide experience with methods used to analyze DNA and RNA, such as Southern and northern hybridization, polymerase chain reaction, and DNA sequencing. Evaluation will be based on periodic exams, lab reports, and a class presentation. Lectures and laboratory: six hours a week. Prerequisite: Biology 202.
