AMST 403(F) American Studies in Practice
Each year this seminar will have a designated topic for collective reading and discussion. The topic for the fall of 1997 will be Violence in America. We shall consider violence both as a physical and as a symbolic matter, in terms of actual bombs and guns and in terms of cultural warfare. By means of a variety of texts (novels, studies, films), we shall take up such subtopics as the religious origins of American violence, the racial content of American violence, and sexual violence. Students will be asked to develop individual research projects consonant with the topic (broadly conceived) and their fields of specialization. Open only to American Studies Senior Majors, or by permission of the instructor.
