CLLA 302(S) Vergil's Aeneid
This course is a comprehensive introduction to Vergil's Aeneid. Students will develop their ability to read and translate the Latin text of the poem, while at the same time exploring the
major interpretive issues surrounding the definitive Roman epic. Through a combination of
close reading and large-scale analysis, we will investigate the poem's literary, social, and
political dimensions with special attention to Vergil's consummate poetic craftsmanship.
Format: discussion/recitation. Evaluation will be based on class participation, a midterm
exam, a final paper, and a final exam.
Prerequisites: Latin 201 or permission of the instructor. Enrollment limit: 12 (expected: 10).
