REL 212(F) The Development of Christianity: 30-600 C.E. (Same as History 324) (W)
How did Christianity develop in the first few hundred years? What factors in its
historical and cultural contexts influenced the ways in which it developed? The
class is designed to introduce you to the history of early Christianity between
30-600 C.E. While this class addresses the basic flow of events and major
figures in early-Christian history, it will also require you to develop a critical
framework for the study of history in general. In addition, you will gain
significant experience in the critical analysis of primary source materials.
Special attention will be paid to the incredible diversity of early-Christian
thought and practice. The course is organized chronologically, geographically,
and thematically. We shall consider how these categories make a difference for
the study of early Christianity.
