LING 350(S) Sociolinguistics (Same as Sociology 350)

This course examines major topics in the field of sociolinguistics, including: the relationship between linguistic behavior and social groups; the effects of geography, age, sex/gender, social class, ethnicity, and style on language (form) used; attitudes about language forms; bilingualism; sociolinguistics and second language acquisition; language and dialect contact; and pidgin and creole languages.
Format: lecture/discussion. Requirements: participation in discussions, presentation of a research article to class, midterm exam, final exam, and a group term project.
Prerequisites: Linguistics 100 (formerly Linguistics 101). No enrollment limit (expected: 20).
