This survey course covers Anglo-American history from the period of colonial
settlement to the immediate aftermath of the Civil War. Major social, political,
economic and cultural developments will be examined. Readings emphasize
three themes of major importance in order to better understand the period surveyed: gender, slavery, and Indian America. The objective of this course is to
provide students with a general knowledge and understanding of Anglo-American history to 1877, as well as to introduce them to some important historiographical debates and historical methodologies.
Format: lecture/discussion. Evaluation will be based on class participation, a series of short analytical papers, and a final exam.
No prerequisites. No enrollment limit (expected: 30-40).
