ENGL 216(S) Introduction to the Novel
A team-taught lecture course on the development of the novel as a literary form.
Texts include: Henry Fielding's Tom Jones; Jane Austen's Emma; Charles Dickens' Great Expectations; James Joyce's A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man;
William Faulkner's The Sound and the Fury; Vladimir Nabokov's Lolita; and
Toni Morrison's Song of Solomon. Occasional sessions will be scheduled during
the term for informal discussions and questions.
Format: lecture. Requirements: midterm and final exams, and occasional short
writing exercises. .
Prerequisites: a 100-level English course, except 150. Enrollment limit: 100 (expected: 100).
