ECON 512 Agriculture and Development Strategy (Same as Economics 369) (Not offered 2006-2007)
This course examines the role of agriculture in the development process, and the
effects of government policy on the agricultural sector. Topics will include the
economics of farm households as producers and consumers, effects of policy on
agricultural growth, linkages between agriculture and non-agricultural sectors,
trade-offs between cash and food crop production; pricing criteria for
agricultural products, food security issues, and whether or not food
self-sufficiency is a reasonable goal of government policy.
Format: lecture/discussion. Requirements: midterm, final, three to four 5- to
8-page papers or one long paper, plus occasional assignments.
Prerequisites: Economics 251 and 252. Undergraduate enrollment limited and
requires instructor's permission. Attendance is required for undergraduates.
