ECON 508 Development Finance (Same as Economics 395) (Not offered 2006-2007) (Q)
This seminar examines the relationship between finance and poverty. Topics
include informal village financial institutions, entrepreneurship and financial
constraints, design and evaluation of microcredit programs, debt relief, World
Bank conditionality and foreign aid reform. The course emphasizes
enforcement difficulties and information asymmetries in financial markets. We
explore the potential for and limits of public intervention.
Format: seminar. Requirements: problem sets, midterm, final exam and a
research paper.
Prerequisites: Economics 251. Undergraduate enrollment limited and requires
instructor's permission.
