COMP 111(S) The Nature of Narrative (Same as English 120) (W)*
In this course we will examine texts from a variety of periods and traditions that
will help us to explore the dynamics and effects of different narrative techniques.
We will analyze different narrative approaches that are used in the telling of a
story. What role do different narrators play in different texts? What influence
does narrative technique have on the text and on its appreciation? Our primary
readings may include works from Antiquity and selections from One Thousand
and One Nights, along with texts by al-Jahiz, Goethe, Cervantes, Clarice
Lispector, Julio Cortazar, Tayyib Salih and Mariama Ba. Our theoretical texts
will be comprised of early commentaries on narrative from Aristotle and Plato,
but will also include material from more contemporary theorists such as Roland
Barthes and Gerard Genette. All readings are in English.
