ARTH 476 Zen and Zen Art (Not offered 2006-2007; to be offered 2007-2008)*
In this undergraduate seminar we will study a variety of art forms (paintings,
architecture, ceramics, tea ceremony and gardens, and Noh drama) in the context of Zen Buddhism in China and Japan. We will investigate the Zen aesthetic
ideals, and the religious and philosophical meanings conveyed by these art
forms. We will also consider the influence of Zen in American culture.
Format: lecture/discussion. Evaluation will be based on short writing assignments, group projects, midterm and class participation.
No prerequisites. Enrollment limit: 16.
