ARTH 241(S) Dutch Art of the 1600s: Hals to Vermeer
Rembrandt van Rijn, Frans Hals, Jan Vermeer are only the best-known of the
many artists who were active in the northern Netherlands during the seventeenth
century. The variety of their subjects was unprecedented, but the degree of
symbolic content in their work is disputed: to what extent was Dutch painting an
art of description or of hidden allegory? We will consider this problem and also
give special attention to the ongoing reinterpretations of Rembrandt's oeuvre
and life.
