ARTH 212(S) Race, Sexuality, and Cinema (Same as Africana Studies 212)*
An interrogation into the nexus of race, sexuality, and cinema, this course begins
with a consideration of how cinema has constructed normative understandings
of race and sexuality before moving into an interrogation of non-normative racialized and sexualized visual images. Students are expected to be open to and
comfortable with discussing and analyzing a range of representations of race
and sexuality, including those presenting heterosexuality, homosexuality, and
their variations. One of the primary goals of this course is to provide tools and
strategies that encourage and support students' on-going critical engagements
with contemporary media culture's images of race and sexuality.
