AMST 311(F) Asian American Film (Junior Seminar)*

This course explores the relationship between Asian Americans and early twentieth century cinema. We will consider the representation of Asians in early visual forms, from vaudeville and museum fairs to the earliest incarnations of the moving pictures, in order to examine the role of race in the birth of cinema and the formation of a burgeoning U.S. modernity. Moreover, this course will move beyond analysis of representation and stereotypes and consider Asian Americans as spectators that constitute significant movie-going publics.
