ARTH 200 Art of Mesoamerica (Not offered 2005-2006; to be offered 2006-2007)*
This course surveys the painting, sculpture, and architectural of the ancient, pre-Colombian Olmecs, Mayans, Zapotecs, and Aztecs of Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, and Belize from ca. 1000 B.C. to the Spanish conquest beginning in 1521 A.D. Emphasis will be upon the cultural context of this native-American art in light of recent archaeological discoveries and new anthropological and historical methodologies. Format: lecture. Requirements: two hour exams and a term paper. No prerequisites. Enrollment limit: 20. Satisfies the non-western requirement.
