PHYS 405T Electromagnetic Theory (Not offered 2004-2005) (Q)

We will review Maxwell's equations and use them to study a range of topics-electric fields and matter, magnetic materials, light, radiation-exploring phenomena and seeking to gain an intuitive understanding. We will also learn some useful approximation techniques and some beautiful mathematical tools. The class will meet as a whole once per week for an hour lecture on new material and to discuss questions on the readings. Each week a second tutorial meeting with the instructor will be scheduled; here, students will take turns working problems on the chalkboard. Written solutions to problems will be due a few days after the tutorial meeting. Format: tutorial, 1&1/4 hours per week; lecture, one hour per week. Evaluation will be based on weekly problem sets, tutorial participation, presentations, and a final exam or final project, all of which have a substantial quantitative component. Prerequisites: Physics 202 and Physics 210 or Mathematics 210. Enrollment limit: 20 (expected: 10).
