ARTH 172(S) Asian Art Survey: From the Land of the Buddha to the World of the Geisha*

This course introduces to students some of the major monuments of Asian art with an emphasis on the art of India, China, and Japan. Its contextual approach helps the students gain insight into the aesthetic, religious, and political ideas and cultural meanings conveyed by the works of art. It also provides students with the vocabulary, techniques, and patterns of thinking, needed for advanced art history courses. Format: lecture. Evaluation will be based on 5 quizzes, class attendance, and 3 short essays. No prerequisites. No enrollment limit. Highly recommended for first-year students.
