CHIN 101(F)-W088-102(S) Basic Chinese*
An introduction to Mandarin, the language with the largest number of native
speakers in the world, which is the official language of mainland China and
Taiwan, and one of the official languages of Singapore. Course objectives are
for the student to develop simple, practical conversational skills and acquire
a basic proficiency in reading and writing in both the traditional and the simplified
script at about the 500-character level. This course, which assumes no prior
background in Chinese, will consist of approximately 60% training in speaking
and listening with the other 40% spent on reading and writing. Classes consist
of a combination of "act" classes, conducted exclusively in Mandarin, where
students use the language in various types of drills and communicative activities;
and "fact" classes, conducted in Mandarin and English, where students learn
about the language and culture. Both audiotapes and videotapes will be employed
extensively. Evaluation will be based on daily classroom performance, homework,
quizzes, weekly tests, and a final exam. Credit granted only if both semesters
and the winter study sustaining program are taken.
