GERM 302 German Studies, 1830-1900 (Not offered 2002-2003; to be offered 2003-2004)

A survey of German literature, thought, and culture from the end of the Goethezeit to the Jahrhundertwende, with attention to the political and social movements that culminated in the unification of Germany as the Zweites Deutsches Reich. Readings by Buchner, Heine, Grillparzer, Marx, Wagner, Meyer, Fontane, Nietzsche, Bismarck, Hauptmann, Busch, and Schnitzler. All primary readings in German.

Format: seminar. Requirements: active class participation, two presentations, two papers. Prerequisite: German 108 or the equivalent. Expected enrollment: 8.
