ENGL 374(S) The Monologue

The monologue is an eccentric theatrical device-the single voice speaking uninterrupted for an extended time in a departure from realistic dialogue. The class will be a study of this device and will require both creative writing and video production. After reading and watching many examples from theater and movies, students will write a series of original monologues and they will choose one as the basis for a short video which they will cast, direct, shoot and edit. A written analysis of the student's production process will also be required. Final works will be shown in a video `display' of monologues. Format: discussion/seminar. Requirements: exercises in writing monologues; short video production; written analysis of the production process. Prerequisite: a 100-level English course, except 150. Enrollment limit: 15 (expected: 15).
