PSYC 262(S) Health Psychology

An integrated analysis of the mental processes and behavioral characteristics that enhance or impair physical well-being. Topics include stress and coping; the influence of psychobiological, behavioral, and social factors on medical disorders such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, and AIDS; and the psychological consequences of acute and chronic illness, placebo effects, and the patient-physician relationship. Students will have the opportunity to pursue topics of special interest, work that will culminate in the creation of a class web site. Format: lecture. Requirements: hour exams, several short thought papers, class presentations, and web site design. Prerequisite: Psychology 101. Open to first-year students. No enrollment limit (expected: 60).
