PSCI 221 The Causes of War (Not offered 2001-2002; to be offered 2002-2003)

Developing a general theory of the causes of war has been one of the most important tasks for students of international relations. This course will survey the most influential theoretical perspectives on the causes of war, including approaches at the systemic, national, and individual levels of analysis. We will then examine how well these general theories help us to understand the specific origins of the First and Second World Wars, as well as the absence of Great Power war after 1945. The final part of the course will examine the possible causes of future wars and conflicts in the twenty-first century. Requirements: one 7- to 8-page paper, a midterm, and a final exam. No prerequisites. International Relations Subfield
