MUS 114 American Music (Not offered 2001-2002)
A survey of musical development in this country from the seventeenth-century psalters and eighteenth-century New England tunesmiths through the genteel tradition, the rise of jazz, and the growth of art-music from the Boston academic tradition to the major American composers of the twentieth century. Format: three lectures per week. Evaluation will be based on two tests, two short papers, and a final exam. Enrollment limit: 20.
