ENGL 202(F) Modern Drama (Same as Theatre 312)

An introduction to some of the major plays of the late-nineteenth and twentieth centuries, including such works as Ibsen's The Wild Duck and Hedda Gabler, Strindberg's The Father and Miss Julie, Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard, Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest, Shaw's Heartbreak House, Pirandello's Six Characters in Search of an Author, O'Neill's A Long Day's Journey Into Night, Brecht's Mother Courage, Beckett's Waiting for Godot, and Stoppard's Arcadia. The course will be taught by a combination of lecture and discussion. Requirements: two 4- to 5-page papers, a scheduled final exam, and regular participation in class discussion. No prerequisites.
