ENGL 140(S) Writing the Environment+

Covering both the English and American traditions, we will study the abiding preoccupation of authors with nature and the environment. The location of nature as a site of knowledge, experience, and self-examination, as well as the sense of its endangerment, will be of primary concern. The class will emphasize the inheritance of nature poetry in the twentieth century. Among the authors to be read are Spenser, Wordsworth, Keats, Emerson, Thoreau, Yeats, Hardy, Frost, Moore, Bishop, Ammons, and Heaney. Requirements: class participation, four 3- to 5-page papers, and e-mail responses. No prerequisite. Enrollment limit: 19 per section (expected: 19 per section). Preference to first-year students. Two sections.
