ARTH 251(F) French Painting in the Age of Salon
A lecture course in the history of French painting, beginning with Greuze and Chardin and continuing through Post-Impressionism. The course will focus on the tradition of painting and criticism and will consider major figures from the mid-eighteenth century through the end of the nineteenth century, including David, Gros, Gericault, Delacroix, Ingres, Courbet, Daumier, Manet, Degas, Monet, Cezanne, van Gogh and Gauguin. Requirements: midterm, final exam, short writing assignments, and a conference at the Clark. Prerequisites: ArtH 101-102 or permission of the instructor. Enrollment limit: 40.
