ENGL 313(F) Seventeenth-Century Poetry

A study of selected poets and poetry from the seventeenth century, up to and including a few Restoration writers. In addition to close readings of the poems, we will give special attention to literary genre and cultural background. Among the poets we will read are Jonson, Lanyer, Donne, Herbert, Herrick, Milton, Carew, Suckling, and Marvell. Requirements: two short essays (4-5 pages) and one 10-page essay; occasional short informal writing assignments. Prerequisite: a 100-level English course, except 150. Enrollment limited to 25. (Pre-1800/Pre-1700)
