ARTH 251(F) French Art in the Age of Salon

A lecture course in the history of French art, beginning with Greuze and Chardin and continuing through Post-Impressionism. The Course will focus on the tradition of French Art and criticism and will consider major figures from the mid-eighteenth century through the end of the nineteenth century including David, Gros, Gericault, Delacroix, Ingres, Courbet, Daumier, Manet, Degas, Monet, Cezanne, van Gogh and Gauguin. Important questions arising from competing interpretive approaches (social art history, psychoanalysis, formalism) will supplement the survey. Course requirements will include readings, a midterm and a final, conferences at the Clark and may also include a field trip to New York. Prerequisites: ArtH 101-102 or permission of the instructor. Enrollment limited to 40.
