An in-depth study of the first (and arguably the best) modern novel in the finest English-language translation available, designed for students with no knowledge of Spanish. We will spend the semester exploring the array of themes and characters elaborated by Cervantes in his influential masterpiece, and we will make connections to some of the many takes on Don Quixote in other
literatures and media. Historical and theoretical information, as well as close reading, will shape our understanding of this work of art which has left an impact on numerous European and American novels. Conducted in English.
Evaluation based on meaningful participation, short written assignments, and a final paper.
Prerequisite: any 200-level literature class at Williams, or permission of instructor. Expected enrollment: 30. This course does not fulfill the requirement for the Major in Spanish.
