The SMALL Program

The SMALL Undergraduate Research Project is a nine-week summer program in which undergraduates investigate open research problems in mathematics. The largest program of its kind in the country, SMALL is supported in part by a National Science Foundation grant for Research Experiences for Undergraduates and by the Science Center of Williams College. Over 350 students have participated in the project since its inception in 1988.

Students work in small groups directed by individual faculty members. Many participants have published papers and presented talks at research conferences based on work done in SMALL. Some have gone on to complete PhD's in Mathematics.

On the occasion of SMALL's 20th anniversary, there will be a mini-conference/reunion at Williams on June 8, 2008. All alums of SMALL, Mathematics and Statistics, or Computer Science are invited. In addition to a few invited speakers and faculty, all participants are invited to present short talks (probably 15-minute talks). The day will open with a complimentary continental brunch around 11 am, with talks starting by 1 pm. Invited speakers include Michael Hutchings SMALL '92 of UC Berkeley and Bethany Mclean '92, who exposed the Enron scandal. The day will end with a complimentary dinner. You can register for free by mailing or emailing Marissa.Barschdorf@williams.edu, Math/Stats, Williams College, Williamstown, MA 01267 with your name, address, telephone, and email address. We're hoping for a diverse group of participants and we're inviting applications for travel support. Funding by the National Science Foundation, the Research Corporation, and Williams College.

During off hours, students enjoy the many attractions of summer in t he Berkshires: hiking, biking, plays, concerts, etc. Weekly lunches, teas, and casual sporting events bring SMALL students together with faculty and other students spending the summer doing research at Williams College.

Participating students receive a stipend of $3,240. Housing is provided free by Williams College and several board plans are available at reasonable rates. The program dates for 2008 are:

June 9, 2008—August 9, 2008
